As the title says, I was driving on the highway on my way home today and suddenly the car started vibrating. It was bad enough to make me pull over. It was rattling and vibrating, but as soon as I stopped, it went away. I had the car towed because it was shaking and rattle bad enough to make me not want to drive it. I’ve noticed it only does this while moving. Not in park or even in drive while I’m idling, but the moment I let off the break, it begins to rattle. The faster I go, the worse it gets. I don’t see anything hitting the tire or any other part. No check engine light, nothing. Any ideas? Any help would be great, thank you!

Can you isolate the area of the rattle? Can you identify it as being closest to a particular wheel? Have you had any of the wheels off lately? Does the rattling noise change while you’re hitting the brakes? Can you feel the vibration most distinctly in the seat or the steering wheel? Both perhaps? Year, make, and model please?

Start with answering these questions and then there will probably be more questions to throw back at you after these are answered.

It sounds like the rattle might have something to do with the issue. Based on your description I’d be taking a good look at the operation of the transmission. Also, in the future please give is make, model, and year. More info on finding noises and vibrations here.

Suddenly, it can be a wheel balance weight that fell off.

Or sometimes U-joints or CV joints start binding all of a sudden.

I would first look carefully at all the wheel rims, inner and outer, and see if there is an area where there is a change in coloration, that would suggest there had been a weight there.

The next thing is to jack up each wheel off the ground and try rotating it by hand, any binding is a bad thing. A little brake-scraping is normal, but any sudden binding at some point in rotation is bad, often a u-joint or cv joint. binding up.
