My step-dad has a 73 Chevy Caprice and his son was driving it a couple months ago and thought he ran it out of gas. So they put gas in it and it wouldn’t start. My step-dad was told by some people it could be the fuel pump. So he replaced it and it still wouldn’t start. After that a few other people looked at it and no one could figure out what the problem was. Some one suggested that there was an issue with the sending unit and that the tank would need to be dropped. Hearing this my step-dad pushed the car in the back yard and that’s where it sat for a few months. I went over and started looking at it and pulled the feed line for the pump and stuck it in some gas. The car fired up and ran. We then re connected the line and the car ran for a few minuets before stalling out. I did the same thing and backed it up on some ramps. While it was running I saw gas leaking from by the tank. I look and a 2 foot long piece of rubber hose was leaking. Pulled the hose off and it had two big holes in the sides of it. I replaced the hose and now the car runs great. My step-dad couldn’t have been happier. This was my first true accomplishment where I was able to fix something no one else could. It’s a great feeling.

That’s a very COOL storey. It makes me smile just to read it. That’s the kind of things that make people get into automotive repair but don’t be fooled cuz next time you might start pulling ur hair out to solve a problem.
I’ve done other repairs before for family but usually it was strait forward like brakes or a belt or something. And usually they’re thankful for it but this time it was a true diagnosis. Plus seeing how grateful my step-dad was afterwards was one of the best feelings in the world. And I never worked on anything that old before. I’m only used to working on fuel injected stuff so really figuring out how this works was just amazing to me. I know it’s old technology but I barely understand it haha.
I think it’s partly why I don’t want to do general automotive repair for a living. I don’t want to lose that joy.
