      i have a 2001 oldsmobile intrigue,

      the problem im having is,
my car feels like its about to stall, but then it kicks back in. when it feels like its about to stall, the head lights dim, and the A/C also loses power for a split second.

i only have this problem when in drive. at the park position, i do not have this problem from the test ive done.

i replaced the alternator because it went out. the car was doing this before the alternator went out. so i figured it was because of that. well. its replaced. i tested the charging system, its charging well, and the battery is in the normal standard.

i have no idea what could be causing this. i have many assumptions, but no way to really go about it.

Hate to tell you this, but you are probably going to save yourself a lot of time and money having a mechanic do a code scan on it. If you have a Pep Boy’s near you I think they will do a scan for free. And you can get the parts while you’re there. (and no I don’t work for Pep Boy’s lol.)

only code popping up is for a secondary air injection system.

          smog pump.

that will cause the car to do that?

what is the smog pump’s importance to the performance of the car?

what the smog pump does is pump air usually to the before catalytic
convertor to help clean the exhaust gas before it gets out the tail pipe.
without the belt on.does the pump move freely.Take the belt off and see if
                      power is restored.

what could be happening is there are one way check valves
that fail.when they fail they let water from the exhaust
back into the pump.which will set a code of p0410. you will
need to check the hoses and check valves.does the smog pump
work? here are some links to help you. There also is a TSB out
                          on this problem.

College Man, as usual you have offered a very insightful comment. In the TSB link they don’t describe checking the valves, and I think your advice is actually better than offered by the dealer. I suppose water could accumulate from outside air moving forward as well, since compression of humid atmospheric gas may cause condensation. Though, compression pressures shouldn’t be very high unless one of those valves is partially frozen shut (another reason to check the valves).

I haven’t had a working smog pump for years and my car runs fine, granted it is a bit older. If your smog pump isn’t working I guess it is possible that it could throw off your o2 sensor but I really don’t think the symptoms you described match that diagnosis. I would just go with what the computer told you.

Idle issues are often mixture issues and both a vacuum leak or a smog pump malfunction can cause issues with the mixture. I’m of the opinion that anytime you have a performance issue and a CEL, fix the CEL and then recheck for your performance issue.
