I know Eric likes to show lots of dead and mangled car parts so it got me thinking, there might be some great pictures from members on here of their own car calamities.

I thought id start the ball rolling and have a bit of a quiz. Here is my 2009 Vauxhall Corsa VXR 1.6 turbo…Im not sure if they make an equivalent in the USA but its 189bhp stock. 5 weeks ago it got sick…like real sick. Take a look and see if you can guess what happened?

      And now the remedy

She lives again and the problem will never re-occur banana:

I should have taken a picture of the massive warpage of the cylinder head that blew the head gasket on my old 88 Toyota Tercel. But those pictures up there are nasty.

Well, the good news is I found piston number 4. The bad news is that it’s spread all over piston numbers 1, 2, & 3! I’m no mechanic, but it looks like that wrist pin stuck a hole in the cylinder wall. Why it happened?? Clueless. I’m waiting on you to tell me.

              Edit: detonation???
              Edit2: Sorry, I mean pre-ignition.

Looks like it was over-revved. Usually shows itself as the bottom of the piston blowing off from the wristpin because its being yanked down on the intake stroke with too much force from its opposing cylinder that is on its power stroke.

Nick, I just found these same pics on the build forum. He mentioned something about replacing the pistons to prevent detonation along with other repair work. Weird since his parts picture included only one piston, set of rings, etc… I think he mentioned replacing all of his pistons, but I may have remembered wrong. Evidently he posted his build thread shortly after this one so we don’t get any credit for our deductive awesomeness!!! My hats off to you and me both as over revving and detonation are like peas in a pod especially on a high compression engine.

Yep, if you’ve seen them fail like that you remember them. I work on diesels for a living and see what happens when they go past the redline. Nice pics of the carnage. Maybe we can keep this thread as a place for people to post the best in mechanical carnage they come across. Neat to see some of the things you get in the shop. I used to own my own shop and had a pegboard of parts for the customers to see. I called it the wall of shame. When I had someone that didn’t want to pay the money to get a repair done and asked what would happen if they waited on it, I usually had a spot on the wall to point at and tell them what that guy’s bill was. Sure did help sell a few jobs.

Yip thats piston 4 turned to glitter, the rest of it was in 5 pieces tangled with the rings. This is becoming a common fault on these GM engines with cast pistons that run anything over standard boost. The pistons and ring landings are subject to thermal shock if the engine is not heated up correctly before hitting the power pedal. There was also a restriction at the exhaust manifold for chamber 4 leading to excessive backpressure and increased temperatures in that area. This gives the weakened piston. The over revving came from a poor ecu remap that set the rev limiter and MAP sensor range way too high….BOOM!!!!

Itd be a great thread for folk to post their pictures of carnage and have some discussion about it. I replaced all 4 pistons and rods with forged internals, upgraded fuelling and exhaust manifold so the car now pulls like a train with only 12 psi giving 248bhp and 280ftlbs torque…ill push it a bit more once things have bedded in. 😉
