Quick question, are you filling the gas tank up and trying to fill it all the way up even after the gas pump handle has clicked off?

Is there a Check Engine light on?

It may be a clogged vent line or something in the EVAP system… But I don’t know Subarus that well…

You might have something floating around in the gas tank that gets stirred up when you fill it up.

A long shot but I can’t think of anything else.

You could sort of simulate the filling action by having you and your friends bounce the car up and down a bit. See if that causes the problem. That would suggest there is something loose in the tank.

good day you probley have a deffective purge solenoid. the solenoid is normally closed when you fill up gas vapor is pushed in the lines, and blocked by the closed solenoid but if its failed gas vapor will
enter the throttle and richen it up to the point of running bad and hard starting.remove the purge solenoid and blow with your mouth into the port it should not flow anything,if it does it has failed then just get a new one.hope this helps. jerry

This is a good theory. I think it’s worth looking into anyway. Keep us posted.
