A few days ago I posted a comment about my negative experience with Car Fax in a different category. I am wondering how others feel. I think it gives you a false sense of security and place no value on a car having a good car fax. Do you use or value a Car Fax report? If you do please explain why? There isn’t a wrong answer here.

        My opinion:

Car Fax only relays the info that’s in a data base that supposedly is truthful. If a vehicle has been in a documented accident Car Fax will have access to that record. If a vehicle has been in an undocumented accident and the prior owner (PO) does not disclose the accident, Car Fax will never get the info.

The Dealer I worked at only sold late model used cars and advertized Car Fax reports for a selling point. About 99.9% of late model used cars are rental fleet cars. After numerous legal issues and cars being bought back because of previous damage that was found by the new owner that was not listed on the Car Fax … then, the Car Fax was only given if asked for with a discloser added.

Reason for Car Fax not knowing about the damage… Most rentals see more air miles than a 737 and they have their own people repair the damage and then the cars are sent to the auction without disclosing any damage. To my understanding Car Fax can’t get the info from the rental companies because rental car companies own the cars and won’t give it out.

One thing positive about Car Fax is; the report list who the PO was. If you see a rental car companies name….run….
