      Hi Eric,

I have just had my car returned to me after having needle roller bearings replaced by Holden(GM) Australia.
Below info. The Car is FEB 08 with 190,000km on the clock

“2006-08 Holden Captiva Diesel: rocker arm bearing failure
In December 2015, a recall was issued for Holden CG Captiva vehicles that were powered by 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines and manufactured from 28 December 2006 to 28 February 2008. In these vehicles, the rocker arm bearings in the engine may fail after prolonged exposure to degraded oil; failure of the rocker arm bearing could cause a reduction in engine power or the vehicle may stall. The recalled CG Captiva vehicles had VINs in the range KL3CD26RJ7B052819 to KL3CD26RJ8H308370 (PRA 2015/15118).” from “http://australiancar.reviews/reviews.php#!content=recalls&make=Holden&model=Captiva&gen=326”

To cut a long story short the car goes worse than when it went in and still has the engine light on. I have been told by the GM dealership that the entire wiring harness is faulty and it needs to be replaced at a cost of $1900AUD plus labour.

My question is can I fix it myself and what tools would I need to do the job?

      Best regards,

      Russell

What codes are you getting? The harness may be fixed if you can pinpoint the problem.

Degraded engine oil never damages just one component in an engine. It damages them all; some worse than others.

If the car were mine I’d run a compression test and make sure the thing isn’t just worn out.

There’s no sense in spending money on any parts unless you know the engine itself is at least fairly solid.

            Hi Guys,

The Holden dealer will not tell me the codes that they found when they put the car on there diagnostic system even after paying for it.

The car is running about 50% of its power at the moment.

I need to buy a code reader that will remove the engine check light and find the problems with the harness.

If you could please suggest one that would be a enormous help? (budget for one is about $500AUD) but if there is no other option I will find some more money)

As far as the engine goes its other wise in good condition and has been regularly serviced.

Usually, you can “flash” the codes with your CEL.

Maybe this could be of help:

Thanks for the info Iznogood the car is OBDII and the problem is more than just the engine check light.

The dealer claims that the light is on because the wiring harness is no good anymore so I need a manual with wiring diagram and a scan tool that can check it.

Trying to find a Captiva 2006-2011 2.0L Turbo diesel workshop manual is also an issue anyone know where I can get one from?

What should be wrong with your harness ? Usually, a harness is only replaced if there has been a meltdown in it or someone REALLY messed it up because they didn´t know what they were doing.

Is it because he can´t actually communicate with the ECU that he claims the harness must be broken ?

In 10 years, I´ve maybe replaced 2 harnesses and that was because the car had been in a crash in one case and due to a shortcut frying the harness in the other.

                    Hi lznogood,

There has been no meltdown, no crash and no frying. The GM Dealership is claiming age and heat have degraded the plastic insulation on a connector attached exhaust system which is causing multiple errors when reading the ECU and want me to replace the whole harness because they believe that the rest of the harness is in the same condition and adding to the errors when communicating with the ECU.

I think you need a second opinion.

In that case, usually I´ld replace the faulty part of the harness. It does depend on the price though. Some cars, the harness is split up, even on the engine.

How much would they be charging you for the harness alone ?

                          Hi Lznogood,

They want $1800AUD plus labour at $156AUD per hour.

I already have taken the car to another GMH Dealership they have said that their was another Captiva they did had the same problem and the customer chose to take their car and not pay to have the harness replaced or fixed.

It looks like in AUD you’re at about 390ish USD for your scan tool budget. Since you’re here on the forums I’ll guess that you will be tackling other projects in the future as well. I bought this https://actron.com/content/elite-autoscanner-kit-enhanced-obd-i-and-obd-ii-scan-tool for about 230 USD, I’d hope it’s available where you are as well. Great scan tool. Likewise, I also own two others, one of which is called a bluedriver. You use it in conjuction with your cell phone and to be honest, that would more than meet your needs for 99 USD. Those are the two I would recommend depending on what you’d like to spend and availability. Can you test the 12v pin on the obdii port with a digital multimeter to see if it gets power at least before investing in a scan tool? If you don’t have one, I would recommend getting a decent auto ranging one and add it to you’re arsenal, they’re very valuable in diagnostic and if you go about fixing that harness if it needs it, will help you a ton.

I checked it doesn’t do my car but thanks for the info.
