I have a 2003 PT Cruiser. I think the stabilizer bar bushings in the back are toast. I can get the car off the ground on ramps, but I don’t have a jack and jackstands. Do you need to get the car in the air, take the pressure off the suspension, to change the bushings? I can’t think of why you would, but I just want to be sure I’m not missing something.

      Thanks

It sure can help. Often you have to take the whole stabilizer bar out, depending on how the bushings work, and to do that you need access to the stabilizer bar ends.

Well, there’s always the two wheels on the curb trick. Then you crawl under in the gutter and hope the neighbor doesn’t decide to water their lawn.

It’s much better if you do. I would not advise attempting it while it’s on the ground. If you run into trouble, access can be very limited. You might consider picking up a good jack and some stands. You’ll get a lifetime of use out of them if you plan on doing more work to your vehicle.

If I’m only going to be lifting up the back,is a 2 ton jack enough? Once you get into 3 ton jacks the price rockets up.

For a PT 2 tons is more than enough. Take into consideration that 2 tons is 4000 lbs. Technically if you had perfect balance that jack could lift the entire car. As stated previously though a good set of jack stands is also recommended. They’re more stable and have less possibility of failing while holding your vehicle.

I got the Torin 2 ton trolley jack and 3 ton jackstands.

I feel a world of possibilities opening before me….
