I changed my oil yesterday on my 2003 Mercury Sable with the 3.0 OHV engine, 107,000 miles. (these cars are identical in every way to a Ford Taurus of the same vintage). I have always used synthetic oil since I got the car with 35,000 miles on it. Yesterday I bought (what I thought was) a gallon sized container of oil and put all of it in. The store I shopped at only had these large size containers for my grade of oil, and I did not want to buy 2 gallons of oil, so I figured I would just go elsewhere for an extra quart later. I changed the oil and filter, and my car calls for 4.5 qts for a fluid and filter change. I figured I would just go 1/2 quart short until I went to another auto parts store. However when I looked at the container, it was actually 5.1 quarts, not 1 gallon or 4 quarts. So to sum it up my car has 0.6 quarts of extra oil in it. My dipstick reads right on or maybe 1/16th inch above the upper portion of the “full” range.

Synthetic oil is expensive, so if it wont hurt I dont want to drain and refill, and I’m not sure how to remove just 1/2 a quart. Any advice would be welcomed.

loosen the drain plug. back it out until it comes
out.But keep the plug at the hole to control the flow.
screw the plug in hand tight and check the oil dip stick.
repeat as necessary.catch the oil in a clean pan and put
it back in the bottle if not used.tighten plug when done.

Its better to remove the excessive oil in there or you might start getting engine leaks.
Its very easy to do… dont worry if to much comes out, you can put some back in and check the dipstick ..

i dont think a half quart will hurt anything. if you arent smoking or seeing leaks where you didnt before you should be ok

all really depends on how close your crank comes to dipping into your oil too because too much and the crank can dip in it and whip the oil. but you should probably be fine with your 1/16 inch over max

The engine needs room to breathe. If you put more oil than needed its gonna go to all those places it shouldn’t and it’ll build up more pressure than normal causing gasket leakes for it to come out and many more problems could occur.
So get your oil level down to the F mark. The engineers at car manufacturing companies are not fools they’ve put that F mark there for a reason.

+1 to lord ihcalam. From what you said it doesn’t sound like you have over filled it enough to cause any problems. If you want you could do what college man said.

It takes about 5 minutes to remove some oil from your engine… Just drain some out and then you can drive your car peace..

Putting 0.6 quarts extra oil in your engine may or may not cause short/long term damage. Chances are it won’t hurt, however your not gonna know until its too late. If I were you, I would drain out the extra oil into a clean container and use it for top off’s. It’s better to be safe than sorry, plus peace of mind is bliss. The thought of having extra oil won’t be hanging in the back of your mind until your next oil change.

I would like to add that if you feel better safe than sorry a siphon used on a cold engine might be a bit easier so you don’t have to crawl under and worry about fumbling the drain plug and having to readd any extra you might remove.

u could always just change the oil filter again. that will take oil out and it will need more to charge the filter again. should put it right at full

I don’t think a half a quart is going to do any harm. If you notice bubbles on the dip stick however drain the oil out. BTW you really don’t need to run synthetic. The only real benefit is extended oil change intervals, up to 7-9K. In fact running synthetic on an older engine that wasn’t designed for it can cause an increase in oil consumption and external leaks.
