The title says it all. Can a racing tier (Slicks) affect the axle gear? will it put more stress on the internals of the axle since slicks high friction rate is preventing torque to spin the tiers out and the axle is taking all that torque? that is my thinking process.

The weakest links in the system are the clutch plate hub and the driveshaft U joints. They would probably fail before the rear axle internals do.

I’m going to say that the increased potential traction of slicks is far less of an issue than the torque output of the engine, and the amount of hammering/abuse the driveline is subjected to from a standing start.

Assuming running slick means you’ll be going to the track… A trip to the drag strip will quickly destroy any parts of your drive line that aren’t up to handling the output of the engine.

In the case of a properly prepped drag strip, the issue isn’t as much with the vehicle itself, but they put down something to aid in traction. Where you would normally get some slippage on the street, at the track you will only get bite.

I worked with a couple of guys that had various levels of purpose built cars for the track and we were kinda talking about going to the track until I mentioned that my clutch is a bit on the weak side. I was quickly advised against it unless I planned to replace it soon. Which I’m not because it will be about $1500 in parts.

Yup. Traction is the enemy of drivetrain components. Axles and driveshafts especially. Like others have said, when you have street tires, they don’t hook real well, which is good for the drivertrain but bad for your ET’s cause you’re not getting all the power to the ground. Once you get to racing tires on a prepped track, all that power goes to the track and hooks hard, bending and twisting anything that isn’t strong enough. That’s just the way it is.

as everyone has stated… yes, common issue with GM W body community, everyone puts drag radials on their souped up 3800, they find themselves twisting drive shafts and busting transmissions and even cracking flex plates!
