I have an engine light on for P0404 EGR performance. it is intermittent but becoming more frequent. But i also have a leaky head gasket. It’s not bad. only a slight film of oil on top the coolant, and a slight amount of coolant consumption. very slight i only have to top it off every 3 to 4 months, and the oil i loose about a quart every 3,500 miles. so at this point it’s not bad enough for me to care about it just yet. The problem is i can’t pass safety inspection with that engine light on. granted its intermittent so i was able to pass this time since it was off. But i probably wont be so lucky next time. and when that engine light is on it goes into a closed loop fail-safe which kills my fuel economy. The problem i face is, this car isn’t worth the money it will take to fix the head gasket. So i am just going to drive it till it quits. But i need that Engine light fixed for the sake of safety inspection. So i want to know if a leaky head gasket can trigger an EGR code or if this is likely two separate problems. Because i am willing to fix an EGR. i am not willing to fix a Head gasket. the car just isn’t worth the repair cost.
