So after some experiencing the braking power of a new crossover and a Chevy 3500 truck, I’m beginning to suspect that my brakes are in fact not up to the task anymore, in fact I’m pretty certain. I havn’t had to stand on my brakes to get my car to stop, but I’ve become increasingly worried that should I need to I wont be able to.

So lack of braking power is a problem. Pedal will be stiff the whole time while stopped and doesnt fade, and I’ve ran into a bad MC at work a couple times, I’m not sure it is. Fluid is pretty dark and I can see particles floating around in the fluid that I pulled out. Its getting a flush either way.

Now what makes me suspect the calipers? I’ve been noticing that the steering wheel shaking when braking at high speeds. I thought I’d take the slide pins out and grease them and see if that helps. I’ve gotten the left side. I went to replace the caliper and I had a hard time putting it back into place because of the rivets on the pads, so I tried to push it in, nothing doing, I got my small C clamp and was able to push it in a little, but very little, even with the bleeder cracked. Ok, maybe it was just the clamp and not really able to get a handle on it. Moved to look at the parking brake situation and verify that the shoes are in decent shape (they are) and was able to get the left to work by adjustment. Rain prevented me from starting on the right. But while I was doing that, it was VERY easy to push the piston back in to make room for the rivets.

I’ve also had days where it just seemed to guzzle gas, go 20 miles in a day, a quarter of a tank of gas is gone… I can go 75-90 miles before I go through that, even sitting in rush hour traffic.

But no pulling to one side…. just lack of stopping power.
