I have a 2003 cadillac deville with 169,000 miles. I have a misfire with a p0300 code. While checking for intake manifold leaks, i poured water around where the intake seals against the cylinder head. I noticed that a bunch of white smoke began to come out of the tailpipe which has never happened before. Does this mean i need to replace the intake manifold gaskets? I am aware of this car being prone to head gasket failure. However, i do not have the symptoms of that. No overheating and no oil/coolant mix. Just a rough idle and rough acceleration with no power.

sounds like the intake gasket is leaking. did the cars idle change?

Well it was kind of hard to tell because the misfire is constant.. But i am sure that i never had white smoke come out of my tailpipe, and if the intake manifold gaskets were sealing, no water should have gotten into the combustion chamber… Right?

            Bingo.

It could be the entire cause of your problem, as intake leaks can play havoc with your air fuel mixtures. It could also just be one part of larger issues. Hard to say–but I would change that out first and keep the fingers crossed.

You could also attempt CAREFULLY!!!!! using the propane method to detect intake leaks. By introducing a flammable gas, it might make the air fuel mixture a lot richer and the misfire might go away. Again–this has to be done with extreme care, and I believe Eric has a video showing the procedure (if not? Someone probably has this on youtube). Keep the fire ext. handy if you do this!!! I’d rather not read or see this on the news!

If you poured water onto the intake manifold gasket area and white smoke came from
the tail pipe that should not happen. Are you losing coolant?

You might try a dose of injector cleaner at the next fillup. This fixed a constant miss for me once.
