Buzzing at specific RPM?

Hi. I have a 2001 Honda CRV w/Auto transmission and Ive noticed a faint buzzing noise at 2300-2400 RPMs. It comes an goes exactly at that spot and I can hold it there if I keep it right at that RPM. I dont usually hear it until 2nd gear and 3rd gear. I cannot replicate it when I shift into 1st or 2nd manually, just when its in D. I also cannot replicate it in Neutral or Park, giving it gas. Its kinda hard to tell where its coming from while driving but it sounds like its either right below me or in front. Any ideas on what I can do to locate the problem? I haven’t taken it to a mechanic yet.

That’s an easy one. Catalytic converter shields. Here’s how to fix it.

That was the first thing I checked and it actually already has a clamp on it. Its got some rust on it but it seems like its on there tight and nothing is rattling. I bumped stuff around down there and everything seems pretty solid. Does it make sense that it could be something with the exhaust when it only happens at that specific RPM?

Buzzing is often a sheet meal part like the safety shield over the exhaust manifold or exhaust pipe. The shield often cracks around one or more of the mounting holes and vibrates against the mounting bolt. The fix is to get some humongous washers to put on both sides of the shield so you can tighten the bolt down on something solid.

Bumping and shaking by hand is not equivalent to roadand driving conditions. Tighten em up.

Cat shields, exhaust brackets etc….then come post if thats really not it after a road test.

Yes, there is another possibility, especially if you’ve had any exhaust parts replaced. I find that especially with aftermarket exhaust parts for Hondas, that the double walled pips of the ‘B’ pipe often break loose internally and cause a noise similar to what you describe. If you hit the ‘B’ pipe and hear the rattle (it’s the one behind the catalytic converter and before the muffler), then you should replace the ‘B’ pipe to eliminate the noise. I have had some luck hitting the outside of the pipe with a hammer to deform it and hold the inner pipe in place. The sign above that door says, “enter at your own risk”.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Im kind of embarrassed to report, it was just the heat shield.

This is a car I bought just a few months ago and it already had a clamp around the front part of the cat and it was on there pretty tight. When I hit on it I didnt notice any rattling or anything so I figured it was something else. I got under there today and put another clamp around the other side of the cat and took it for a test drive. No buzzing sound. I guess I should have tried this before posting.

Sorry guys. But thanks for the help!

Don’t be embarrassed. When it comes to car repair we have all been fooled a time or two.
