 I need a new turbo for my hilux surf but not sure if I should trust a “Made in china” turbo one from Toyota is out of the question as it would probably cost a fortune like £400 or more $648 to you in the US

I need to put my favorite saying in my sig – You Get What You Pay For. I personally would pay the extra money … now, don’t get it from the dealer directly, I’m sure like in the US (granted, never been overseas, or even left home much) but I’m certain you can find the same part, made by a reputable company (BorgWarner, where I worked, was one, there are plenty of others) for $500 or so. Now, keep in mind, the precision of a turbocharger, you need to have someone actually doing QA/QC on each turbo to get good quality products, and if you just pick some guy named Lee (because you said chinese manuf. I’m going with a chinese name here… follow with me) off the street and tell him to measure each one, and keep in mind, they’re probably paid based on how many pass, they’ll let a lot of lower-grade components go through (not just blowing hot air, I had to train a bunch of the guys at the manufacturing center from Beijing how to use some tools I designed, and they kept trying to take shortcuts that would reduce quality significantly, and I kept having to tell them they can’t do that) that could do significant damage to more expensive parts, like, say, idk, your engine.

I’d go with the Toyota dealer parts before I’d just throw some random ebay find turbo on my vehicle, but that’s just me…

I personally wouldnt buy a chinese one. Just think if it fails prematurely then it could take out your engine! Pay the extra for peace of mind if nothing else.

Can you imagine having to return it. That would be a nightmare.

Seen a chinese turbo once – was a properly shocking piece of equipment. If you value your engine, then stick the extra cash to it and get a good reman or if you can stretch to it, a new one!

                Regards

                Phil

Has anyone ever purchased anything that was made in China that is actually a long-lasting, quality item?

We all know the answer to that question.

It costs less to purchase better quality parts and not have to worry about cheap made in China parts failing and needing replacement time after time.

                    Kinugawa Turbos

Try this place. In Australia where everything is much more expensive most people buy new through this company rather than getting turbos rebuilt. There are great products and results at good prices from this company.

I wouldn’t ebay a turbo however unless it came from a local seller.

Asian metals are lower grade. For example, duralast CV axles from autozone are from china. duralast u-joints are from china. I had a bench vice from china that snapped in half.

There is a reason you are paying less.
