so guys, I found a 2007 chevy colorado with 190k on it. dealer wants 6500. it’s a 2.9 4cylinder with the manual transmission and is a 4×4 extended cab. already checked out the truck and have test drove it. didn’t notice any mechanical problems and there is no rust on the body and the frame has been taken care of and under coated and very little rust is popping through (very light surface that can be taken care of easily and is only in tiny spots). the driver before appears to have taken really good care of the truck and used synthetic oil. the clutch i know is a wear item and manual transmissions last for nearly ever. The engine miles it what bothers me but i could always rebuild, put a low miles engine in, or put a crate motor in it. the only spot is some clear coat pealing on the roof which is not uncommon and have researched and gm paints tend to do that. Is this a good deal?

It is absolutely impossible for a random person on the internet to tell you if a car is a “good deal” for you. Vehicle prices and the reasons for them vary widely by region. what may be a good deal to me, might be a bad deal for someone a few hundred miles away.

In my opinion if it was taken care of i would consider it, maybe lower the prive a bit more, if the body has no rust thats a very encouraging sign

I was unclear on what i was asking. Does anyone think this vehicle will be a good vehicle and reliable even though it has 198k if it was taken care of and not beat all to hell and if so, how long does anyone thing it’ll run for until it starts to have major problems assuming i do all the proper maintenance and up keep the truck. I don’t know that much history on the 2.9 inline 4 cylinders in the colorado’s. i’ve done some research and it appears good but that’s from buyers experience and wanted to get some technicians and car guy knowledge. I drive 80miles a day mostly open road and highway and just would like some peace of mind.

Are the 190k miles? If so its a bit high i would say if you want it to run for a long time, if they are km i will buy it if its had good maintenance

I think i might use this thread to document my experience with purchasing a high mileage truck and discuss stuff the more i find out and have input on what others think.
I did buy the truck. So far I like the truck. I’ve owned it since 1/6/17 and the deal was done around 8pm. I bought it from a chevy dealer and it was in their bargain lot. It has the 2.9 4cylinder and manual trans with 4×4. it’s the 2007 chevy colorado work truck (basically the complete base model). i drove it 60miles home stopping to fill it up and put 87octane in it. the next morning it was around 10degrees out. go out to start the truck and it does not want to start, cranks but doesn’t start. after a couple minutes of cranking, letting it sit and such it finally turns over. I’m figuring it has to do with moisture in the gas and it sitting for a period of time. Haven’t really had a problem starting since. the truck blows a little heat but not much and the temp gauge stays really low, i figure it’s time for a thermostat anyway. Driving a little time before getting the thermostat it throws a check engine light, stop and get the part and also have them plug it in since i was there, code comes back related to the thermostat. The thermostat will be tonights project once im off work. Other than that the truck has been fine, drives smooth, shifts like it should and brakes really well since the dealer put new lining and surfaced the rotors. truck has been driven around 250miles in the short amount of time.

Miles are in indicator of wear but not a very good one. Many other vehicles use hours, such as aircraft, boats, construction equipment, industrial equipment, and a host of other things use HOURS. Still not perfect but a better indicator. Another subject for another day.

One thing miles does do is dramatically effect the financial value of the vehicle. You can use it to get the price down but otherwise consider the condition.

                  Condition
                  Age
                  Mileage
