when was the last time the fuel filter was changed? Also you could check the air filter seems pretty obvious but you should always start out with cheap stuff before throwing parts at it. And it wouldnt hurt to make sure all your vacuum lines are secure and have no leaks.
i would say you got a timing issue their ? check the belt or chain has not skipped a tooth ? if all ok check that you dont have an erratic spark problem ? cam sensor or crank position sensor .
It sounds like a timing problem. In the case of that engine could mean that either the ignition module or crank sensor is having an issue. We used to replace both as a set to avoid come backs. I’m not saying that’s what your problem is but it’s worth looking into. You might also check for any air leaks between the MAF sensor and the engine. Any air leaks here can cause problems. Also, you might try unplugging the MAF sensor and starting the car. If it starts fine you might have a MAF sensor problem. I suppose I should have started this by saying you should check for any check engine light codes you might have first and diagnose those before you go looking for other problems. Keep us posted.
