      Hi Guys,

I was changing the water pump/timing belt/tensioner on my b18c -r and the bottom left water pump bolt snapped. I figure I’ll drill it with reverse bits first and see how it goes. since it’s in a tight spot, do you guys suggest dropping the motor down onto a pallet under the car to get straight at it, or investing in a right angle drill that may fit? I just swapped my car and getting the engine in and out is something I want to avoid, but it’s fresh in my head and I have a cherry picker waiting. Which route do you guys suggest?

Also, I am thinking about going all oem for the parts even though it costs a fortune, so are there any alternatives like napa that you guys suggest?

      Thanks!

If a right angle drill will work go that route.
does it help you to undo the motor mounts and jack
the motor up or tilt one side?

It’s very tight in there. You may not even have access with a 90º drill. You might have some success with dropping one side of the engine down but it’s hard to say. You may have to drop it out the bottom and work on it outside the vehicle.

As for parts. The OE is made by Adler I believe. I wouldn’t use Napa. I think you’d be better off with like a GMB or something.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Update: I pulled the motor out and used an easy out on the bolt which worked OK. I got about 65 percent of it out and it broke again, pretty much at the end of the hole I drilled. I figure I’ll give it another shot today to get the whole thing out, but if I can’t I’m sure a smaller bolt will work fine.

thanks for the suggestions, Eric. Have you guys ever used Gates timing kits? The prices on amazon look good, and I hear gates belts are an “industry standard” but I’ve never used them.

The Gates stuff isn’t bad. It’s not as good as it used to be. BTW you don’t need the tensioners and all the other stuff you get in the kit. All you normally need is the belts and the pump. The tensioner rarely has an issue. Not getting that can also save you some $$.

Good luck and keep us posted.
