hey any ideas? was driving to work in my 2.4TD 92 surf at 75-80 mph overtaking when I lost power like a rapid misfire leaving a brief trial of black smoke for a split second then it was fine. oil level and pressure fine temperature fine serviced well, engine check light off all seems fine gave it a check over apart from my turbo that needs replacing because its slowly growing play in the shaft i’m hoping its just the turbo giving me a reminder that its dying or could it be something else?

I use a lot of oil probably several litres a year some due to small leaks and the turbo maybe. I fitted an oil catch can mounted behind the front grill for the PCV hose. it has done 190,000 miles but the cam belt has been done. thank you hope you can help

If you add oil because It’s level down, you have a leak. If the leak is in the rubber valves sealant above your cylinder, you will have blue smoke coming out when you accelerate. If you have a head gasket leak that only oil pipe targeted (It’s rare. Normally you will have coolant leak in the same time), you will have smoke coming out all the time. Order oil leak can be found on the ground when your car is at idle.

The turbo increase pressure in yours cylinders, so I suspect a small head gasket leak first. I will go a leak test. The play of your turbo can permit air and gas escaped from the intake and unbalance the ari gas mixture for the perfect explosion that cause gas/milage worst and a dirtier engine.

thanks  but you don’t seem to have understood the question “I was driving to work at 75-80 mph and overtaking when I lost power it was like a rapid misfire leaving a brief trial of black smoke for a split second then it was fine. the oil level and pressure was fine temperature fine too and no engine check light was on”

You may have had a Brief oil gulp from the turbo
losing oil. remove the intake from the turbo.see
            if oil residue is inside.
