Three nights ago I got into an accident because my brakes got rock hard upon the second push. A guy slowed down suddenly and I had a great gap in between which was supposed to give me enough time to slow down. However, I slammed my brakes one time to slow the car down, but it wasn’t enough so i mashed it a second time. The second time the brakes were rock hard and I had no other option but to switch lanes. So you guys could figure out what happened next; a costly accident. For the past two days its been happening intermittently. Do you guys have any clue what I should check or what it could be? Thanks!

A rock hard pedal yet unable to stop is usually a sign of a bad brake booster. with the car parked step on the brake pedal. if you hear a sound as if air is escaping then the booster is bad. also check the vacuum line going to the booster. there is usually a valve at the end of the vac line where it plugs into the booster. sometimes it is this valve that goes bad.

I do hear like a “sigh” sound when pressing the brake while the car is off. But it’s coming from the brake pedal. After two or so pumps, it turns rock hard. It is similar to how it felt just prior to the accident. Today I had a 50 mile trip and the brakes worked perfectly. The only time I felt resistance is during the first couple minutes while the car was reaching normal operating temperature. I have ’00 Lincoln LS v6 with Advance Trac. 2,967 cc (3 L; 181 cu in) Ford Duratec 30 V6.

Ever since I bought the car, I observed that I have to push the pedal about 1/3rd way to get any real braking power. Before I bought this one, I had a 92 camry which gave me instant braking power as soon as you tap the brake pedal. Just a little background info I thought I’d share.

check valve on brake booster bad, replace the hose leading to it also.

To test the brake booster. You will need a hand held vacuum
pump to see if the diaphragm holds vacuum. also check the hose
                and fitting for breakage.

Thats how my Daewoo is whereas our Impala is like yout camry was cars differ as far as brake response goes i think it depends on how much brake pad is left, how well your vacuum system works (some cars have weaker pressure than others) also mite have to do with the quality of brake system parts (lines, fluid, booster, cylinder) some cars dont have power brakes even.

Are you low or losing brake fluid?

I was wondering in a sisuation like that brakes going out or driver passing out, what would happen if u took out the key out the ingions. My father( had a heart problems)Told me when I was 10 yrs, old if he passed out at the wheel. That I should try to steer the car to the side of road & pull the key out of the ignions…it would slowly stop.( of course if I couldn’t reach the brakes) I can’t wonder what would it do to the car?

usually the key won’t come out of the ignition while running.
