Brake Squeal when backing up and brakes are cold

Hi, the last few mornings I noticed a squeal when applying brakes as I back out of the garage. I thought, oh, front and/or rear brakes, and both were thin – alas, it didn’t. Everything seems to be tight, so I’m scratching my head…and it doesn’t occur once the brakes warm up???

The vehicle is a 1999 Honda Odyssey with 196K miles.

Any ideas will be appreciated!

I’m assuming you haven’t had any work done on them recently. So, here’s a quick video from Scotty Kilmer on fixing squeaky brakes. This is a pretty straightforward remedy and he shows this for disc and drum variety. I can’t recall whether ERic has done one specifically on squeaking brakes but his brake service videos are excellent. Let us know how it’s going.

I just recently picked up the VAN, which had a bad tranny, which i rebuilt, and am now driving on a regular basis. The only brake work done to my knowledge, is the set of front 7 rear shoes i just put on, in an attempt to stop the squeal.

I should have watched this video earlier, as i just checked the rotors/drums for wear groves, and not gloss.

They are the $25 variety from AutoZone, but they squealed before as well. Since I just recently picked up the VAN, which wasn’t drivable, i have no previous history as to how long the squeal has been in place.

BUT, it only do it, AFAIK, in the AM (ie:cold) backing up

I had a similar problem with a “rubbing/scratching/not-quite-grinding” noise on my wife’s Honda and that only happens when backing up too. It did the same with the OEM brakes as it did with new drums and NAPA TrueStop shoes.

As time went on, the brakes became quieter and now they are as loud as they were with OEM.

The front ceramic brakes are nice and quiet.

I think it is a wheel bearing in that when I pulled off the rear hub, the bearing race stayed welded to the axle – I didn’t notice it when I pulled it off the 1st time.

So, how do I get the race off the axle?

You’ll need a grinder of some sort (a die grinder with a cutoff wheel is ideal), a flat chisel, hammer, chunk of sandpaper or crocus cloth, a new bearing and this video. :>)

Be relatively gentle. You want to avoid scoring the axle by cutting too deep or damaging it with the chisel. You may not have to go all the way through the race to get it to loosen it’s grip.

Yep. Scotty gets you into the ballpark but serves up what I call “Auto Repair Light”. Kinda like “If your engine is running rough, stay tuned. Cause today I’m going to show you how to entirely rebuild your engine in 3 minutes.” LOL !!!
I think he’s helpful if you really know what you’re doing, but as far as genuinely useful instructional videos, Eric is top shelf.

Sometimes, I just need folks to cut to the chase -as it were. As big as a fan of Eric Cook (AKA Eric the Car Guy) that I am, sometimes I need someone to cut to the chase and show me the meat. Especially when it’s NOT a car that I’m working on. I just need the generics – if you will.

Nothing against Eric or Scotty.

I also watch “AA” something – er.. whatever … there’s an online parts store that has R&R videos that I watch too. But it’s just R&R.

And there’s “Real Fixes Real Fast” that are awesome – like ASE awesome. They do diagnostics like Eric does and Real Fixes.

That’s the thing with YouTube – R&R is a dime a dozen, but diagnostics…..Eric or Real Fixes and sometimes Scotty.
