      hello everyone,

Just wanted some advice on a way to narrow down a brake problem with my toyota solara. So right now both front brakes are locked up. Before the lock up when sitting at a red light the brake peddle would slowly creep down to the floor loosing pressure. On the last drive before the lock up the brakes became very firm but wouldn’t engage the brakes to slow the car. Then both front brakes locked up with two skid marks down the road. Only the front brakes though not the back brakes. I also have a engine code of lean mixture. Can’t remember the code for sure. I’m pretty sure it was P0420. I did some research on it when i first found out what the code was after scanning a few months ago.

Is there a way to tell for sure if it is a vacuum leak or a brake booster failure for sure. I tried all the tests that were in the factory repair manual. The first was to build pressure with the engine off. Turn on the engine and the pressure should release and the peddle should slowly settle to normal floor level. It passed this test. The second test was to allow the car to run for 2 to 3 minutes. Then turn off ignition and slowly press the peddle. each peddle compression should stop further and further from the floor building pressure. This test failed and it would not build pressure.

Can anyone help me figure this out. I’m leaning toward a bad brake booster seal. Another question how do i get both front brakes to release so that i can move the car by my garage to work on while still having the ability to stop it? Thanks for all the help in advance. Don’t want to just throw a bunch of money at it replacing parts that might still be good.

You may have a dragging caliper causing heat to the fluid locking up
the brakes. Try opening the bleeders to release pressure. More in this
        link.

Your 1st symptom of sinking pedal sounds like a master cylinder or a leak. The 2nd of firm brakes with no engage sounds like a brake booster or vacuum hose to it. Unfortunately leaking master cylinders can ruin brake boosters. It has been awhile since you posted this. Would love to know what your found out.
