      Hi there ladies & gents!

Just recently my right rear brake cable snapped on my 2003 Mazda Protege5. So like routine, I go and see if I can find a replacement cable at the local auto part shop, (Oreily, Autozone.) But to my dismay NONE of these big retailers have my part. So seems like I have to bow down and fork over $90+ dollars for a new right rear brake cable, part # GE7C44410D, to the local dealership. Does anyone here know of a good place for OEM Mazda parts? Am in of a bit of a crunch, especially with ongoing news of layoffs and firings from the recent political atmosphere…

      …anything would be helpful!

      Thanks.

This is something that may be found in a salvage yard. I am partial to my local pick n pull (real name of the company) They usually don’t keep vehicles over 3 months or so, so they usually have pretty fresh stuff, but the sooner you get to one, the better. There is a $1.00 entrance fee where I am, so you may deal with that as well…

They are a nationwide chain and have the lowest prices around where I am…. also you can check if they have your vehicle online… They also have fixed prices… the brake cable should be around $13.99 (plus taxes)… If you call, chances are they can’t tell you if the line has been removed, but they can tell you if they have your make/model/year in stock… The one thing is that like the name implies, you have to pull the part yourself… so bring your own tools…

For example the Modesto Pick n Pull has a 2003 Mazda Protege they have had since September 18th…

The sad truth is that the big retailers of auto parts seldom carry parts like brake cables and hoses for newer cars. They don’t start carrying the parts until the cars are old enough for the parts to be failing commonly.

Having a good go to dealership for parts is a great benefit. I would suggest searching the internet for message forums specific to your manufacturer, or perhaps even to your car.

When I first got my Accord, I searched around, and pretty quickly discovered the cd5tuner forums, and there I learned about Majestic Honda. Although they are a a couple of states away from me, and I have to have parts shippped, their prices, even with the shipping and handling, are FAR better than my local dealerships, and often are competitive even with what is available in the discount after market. Some things are still significantly cheaper to buy at Auto Zone, but for many things the price difference to buy OEM from Majestic is not significant.

my miata friend uses here ——– http://www.autohausaz.com/html/brandnames.html
they seems to carry only some major parts, so not sure whether they have the cable or not.
try to find Mazda OEM online parts shop. it would be useful as long as you have the car

also, junk yard is a good option if it is not hard to pull out yourself.

            Good luck 😀

Thank you all for the quick reply!

ToyotaKarl, yes I am familiar with Pick ‘n Pull, as I use to live around the Newark, CA area. Honestly I’ve been to that one more than several dozen times trying to find parts for my ’91 Acura Integra. Great wreck yard. Very organized, and they charged $2 all-day entrance fee. I recently moved back to southern California and am still trying to find a good wreck yard like that, but luck has not hit me yet.

My concerned with going to the wreck yard is, not so much disassembling the part (which is quite easy enough) but the longevity of the cable. Sure saving money is a priority, however is it wise to get a “pre-owned” part for something like a brake cable?

Do a good inspection of the cable is all I will say… Like any other cable, they can break… Not sure if yours has exposed wire, but if it does, just look it over well and make the call…. If they are rusty, or have broken strands I would pass, but I have replaced brake cables with ones from the pick n pull and had no issues….
