Ok here goes,I got a pair of adaptive one pads from napa….pretty expensive.
Ceramic pads that are hybrid, two different type innner and outer for each side.
Put them on a 2000 ford windstar 109k is the mileage. They work great, quiet, smooth braking, low dust. Its been about two months since they were installed.Until today i heard a sound as if a coffe cup was being bumped againts metal while driving today in the front passenger side of vehicle.Im gonna tear both sides down and inspect each side. While parked i hit the right front wheel with my hand and could hear the caliper pinging like the pad separated from there factory shim.

Wondering what pads everyone has used and trusted?and why?

I buy the cheapest I can find. I’ve had Wagner Thermo Quiet, Raybestos, Wearever all just simi metallic standard pads. Never had a problem with any of them. Only time I ever get noise is when I’ve let them go too long and the pad is gone and I’m down to metal on metal (only happened once). They go from box to caliper nothing else is done. New (cheap) rotor. When I say cheap it is because I always try and buy the parts before I need them. I can usually find them on sale and sometimes can combine a rebate with the sale price. As an example last March I picked up a set of Wagner Thermo Quiet Semi Metallic pads for $17.75 on Amazon on sale (I think they were $12 off at the time) and combined a $10. rebate so got them for $7.75 which I consider to be cheap. Buying before you need ’em lets you avoid having to pay full price when you need ’em.

I have done hundreds of brake jobs for customers and they all have gone cheapo, which is fine. But on my vehicles when i get them i try to go above and beyond standards,ie premium rotors and ceramic pads.My previous van went almost shy of 78k miles on quality rotors and pads for just the front.Well i tore the front brakes off my ford windstar today and found that the shims were very loose on the outer passenger side pads.Fell right off which it has a claw style on the back of the pad, bent the metal clips and snapped it back on the pad.No more noise, and the rotors were as smooth as glass with no grooves. The total cost of ceramic pads, ultra premium rotors and new caliper pin boots were almost $235.Pricey but if i get over six years out of them thats about $39 a year for peace of mind.

Depends on the car. Installing cheap pads in Ford E series full size van would be asking for trouble. usually the brake pad would separate from the backing plate. For most sedans, any cheap brake pads would do the work just as well. The difference is amount of the brake dust and performance. usually more expensive ceramic pads would generate less dust.

On my Avalon I just put Wagner OE spec Ceramic pads all around. Love them. No squealing, great stoppage power. On my 323 I put Raybestos pads on and haven’t had any issues. Got the Wagner pads for a great price too. $60 for front and rear on sale!
