Did front brake pads (duralast, non ceramic) and a new belt.

Belt stopped squaling expect for one squeal on startup and a bit when turning hard right or left and with ac on for a bit but not as bad as before. Is this normal till the belt breaks in?

Also, the car emitted a burning smell (smelled like brakes) after a short (maybe 3/4 mile slow driving) home. Is this also normal for new pads? old rotors were in good enough condition so i didnt change them.

This is my first brake job and serpentine belt job by myself so i wanna be sure i didn’t mess up,

is the belt tensioned manually or is automatic? it would help a bunch if you could tell us what vehicle you are working on.
Normally, you want to ‘bed-in’ new brake pads. You have to go relatively easy on them for a short period (I know EBC pads have a very elaborate bed-in for their new ‘green/red/yellowstuff’ line of pads).
Its weird that you smelled brakes so soon, it sounds like they may be dragging a little. disc or drums?

its a 96 saturn SL-1, automatic tension. Brakes are disc brakes. If the smell continues ill check the pistons again to be sure theyre compressed all the way. Just don’t want a safety issue, but again the car stops as it should.

You should check to see if you need a new tensioner . I would think the spring that puts the tension on the belt is weak. When you drive the car see if you can tell what tire seems to have that brake smell, then remove and check slid pin and piston are not stuck. good luck.

smell seems to have gone away, ill keep an eye on it. As far as the squealing, it is now intermittent when the AC is on, compressor pulley seemed to have some play

only thing I can think of is how did you clean your brake rotors becuase they come with oild on them that you have to remove.. that couse cause a burning smell or leaking brake fluid from a bad caliper or bad brake hose or line..
Im thinking its the belt… or something with that area…
but I would keep an eye on the brake fliud level for the next few days if you want… but I would agree with you all I think its the belt
