      Hello all,

I have recently purchased a brand new Nissan Xtrail (known as Nissan Rogue in USA) with automatic transmission. When I hit the brake pedal for a complete stop of the vehicle, an unpleasant noise is coming from the brakes. The front pads as well as the disk were changed, however the problem was not fixed, the noise is still there.

By the way, I got a chance to test other brand new Xtrail’s and the same noise problem existed on all. Nissan administration in Turkey claims that the noise is normal and they do not care much about it. However, I tested cars of other brands such as Honda, BMW, Volvo, Hyundai, Renault and this problem did not exist on any of these.

Attached are the photos of the pads installed on my car. Do you think these are high quality pads?

Also, take a look at the shim of the pad (s4.postimg.org/uobiuipe5/my_pad.jpg). The shim is made up of metal (aliminium or silver). Most of the pads have integrated rubber shims. I do not understand why Nissan used metallic shim. I checked the shims used on the pads of other car brands, and it looks like they all used rubber shims. Do you think metallic shim is the cause of the noise?

I ordered the product “Liqui Moly Brake Anti-Squeal Paste”, the details of which is given on http://www.liqui-moly.de/liquimoly/produktdb.nsf/id/en_3074.html?OpenDocument&land=DE Do you think this can help to remove noise?

Also, I am interested in ordering another product called Lubegard 90201 (http://www.carboncleanturkiye.com/detay_eng.asp?KatID=3&ID=47&IcerikID=109). Do you think this could be useful?

Any help/comments/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

      Regards,

I assumed the noise isnt coming from the rear since you dont mention anything about it. I would check the wheel bearings. Eric has a video on how to check them.

Some pads do make noise such as grinding and squealing when coming to a stop. If you really have no idea what to do I would change the pads for a different brand

            Hi Jeremy,

The noise has to something with the rotor-pad combination, not with the wheel bearings.

You hear the noise twice: firstly, the moment when you hit the brake pedal for a complete stop of the vehicle. secondly, when you move your foot away from the brake pedal slowly… you do not hear anything when you hit the brake pedal for slowing down the car, you hear the noise only when you hit the break pedal completely for stopping the car.

Unfortunately, there are no pads of a different brand in the market yet…

We have the Nissan Xtrail here in Canada and there are tons a brands that make brakes for them over here. Try using a high grit sand paper on the pads to smooth then out. That might quiet them down a little bit

                Hi Jeremy,

Since you have Xtrail in Canada, is it possible that you suggest me a web site that sells pads for Xtrail 2015 (i.e. Xtrail T32) ?

                I could not find any.

                Thanks

So after an extensive search I have not found any pads for the 2015. Its so weird. I let you know if I find any, I’m going to look a little later.

You said you bought this vehicle “brand new”. You mean you purchased it from a dealer and you’re the first owner? If so, go back to the dealer and make use of your warranty

                      Evil,

Yes, I am the first owner of the car. I already what you suggested. Actually, all brand new Xtrails I have tested so far have this problem. The problem has to something with the metalic pads Nissan uses. If they used ceramic pads, there would probably no noise. Also, the pads lack integrated anti-rattle clips. Another reason for the noise…

Does anyone know any method to make the front side of metalic pads softer so that they do not make noise?

Alternatively, do you know any lubricant that can be put on the front side of the pads as well as on the rotor?

For God’s sake, please don’t even consider lubricating the friction side of the pads and the discs.

The most common cause of noise with brakes is the friction material. I think we’ve already established that. I recommend ceramics. Also, a good brake service goes a long way.

                                Hi Eric,

I think it is the friction between the pads and the disc. Did you take a look a the photos my pads I sent before? Are they ceramic or metalic?

I have already read the faq before posting this thread.

By the way, the noise I have is neither a “squeak” nor a “squeal”. There must be a different word for it, I am not sure about the right one.

Any suggestions about what I can do?

                                Thank you.
