It has been my policy to change my brake fluid every 2 years.

We just bought my wife a new 2013 Highlander, and I’ve been familiarizing myself with its maintenance protocols. I noticed that Toyota’s service intervals NEVER call for the brake fluid to be changed. Some of the guys on the Toyota forum I joined are claiming that the Highlander’s brake system is so tightly sealed that you don’t have to worry about the fluid absorbing water over time, and therefore it’s good for the life of the vehicle.

      Thoughts?

I owned a vehicle where I never changed brake fluid. I eventually had to replace the master cylinder and proportioning valve. This was well past 100K.

If you want to do it I suggest at each major service interval. For both vehicles I own that is every 30,000 miles. Or if taking it to a race track I’d suggest doing it that morning.

If most people ever saw the crud that builds up in a brake systems hydraulics over the years would certainly flush it out.

Most manufactures don’t have a service interval for brake fluid or power steering fluid replacement for that matter but it doesn’t mean the service shouldn’t be done at least every 3 years in my opinion.

I use a tool that measures moisture in brake fluid and it’s amazing how much moisture content I have seen in 1 year old cars.
