Brake Caliber depress = Brake fluid leakage!!

Hello,

So I changed my 2009 Hyundai Sonata front pads, and obviously I had to press the brake cylinder back in to re-install the caliber. I have done this to my other car before. But this time the brake fluid over flowed from the reservoir.

My question is, do I need to be worried about brake fluid spilling out of the reservoir after pressing the cylinder in? is that normal?

BTW, the car runs normal and the brakes are great. But I just want to make sure this over flow of brake fluid is normal? Is there any potential damage to brake lines or master cylinder?

Sounds like the master cyl was over filled. I’d clean up any brake fluid spill ASAP. Brake fluid is extremely corrosive and eats paint.

+1. You aren’t supposed to “top off” the brake fluid. If it is low there is either a leak in the system or your pads/rotor are low.

When the caliper piston(s) is pressed back in the fluid has to go somewhere and where it goes is the reservoir. If sufficient volume in the reservoir doesn’t exist it overflows. Anyway, part of servicing brakes is keeping an eye on the reservoir, don’t let it overflow and don’t let it go dry. Rinse the area where the brake fluid overflowed with water.

Technically, you are supposed to open the bleeder before compressing the caliper so deposits don’t go into the master or damage the brake hose.
