Brake Booster issues…

Car is 2000 VW jetta. Started to hear hissing near fire wall month ago. Found cracked vacuum hose coming off the booster and replaced it. Everything seemed fine until past two weeks.

Issue that I am having is: Hissing from firewall again. Poked around and cleaned out some debris and dirt behind the booster and the noise is now louder. I still have boost brake. They work fine. Once car is turned off the hissing disappears and the pedal becomes hard. I did a vacuum test on the new hose which came back good (18psi) and I put 5 psi into booster which stayed for two hours. When I apply brake the hissing stops. When I release the pedal the hissing returns.

Question is: Is the booster slowly failing or does anyone think that it is just the rubber gasket where the booster mounts to the firewall. I was told that if that is deteriorating it can cause a vacuum leak if not mounted properly… Could this be my case? confused since most people say the booster leaks if you hear hissing when brakes applied. Help!

try putting vacuum on the brake booster itself.
        see if it holds vacuum.

To me it sounds like your booster might be failing. There is not vacuum seal between the firewall and booster, if you’re hearing a leak in that area it’s likely to be the booster itself if you’ve repaired the vacuum hose.

Thank you both for your help. I did the vacuum test on the booster (with gauge) and on its own it wasn’t holding enough. Today I am going tear it out. Found a replacement unit for cheap price. Also will be replacing the seal between the MC and Booster so thank you Eric for that video on removing MC’s; was very helpful. Hopefully the hissing will be gone soon!

Finally got booster replaced. Went for a used part since the new ones are so expensive. Just got back home from shop with it to find there is a small.. very small leak in the used one. Learned my lesson on this one. Its got a leak right here the rod comes out the back to meet the pedal. Long story short it was indeed the booster to begin with. Found a hole in the body of the old one hence my noise and problem! Wish I took photos, it was quite the job indeed since I left all brake lines and abs unit hooked up. Just debating now when and if to just save up and buy a new unit. Sorry for the delay in responding.

Ok so good day today! after another painful attempt it is fixed. Booster in and no noise. Also replaced the vacuum hose with a new one. Didn’t want to revisit this issue so new lines and gaskets. Off to next project: motor mounts! ordering them next week.

I took many notes so I may post them over in the -The ‘How To’ Forum for any VW guys out there. Thanks again.
