      silly question on brake bedding…

I did the fronts (Powerstop pads and rotors) on the wifemobile (2009 VW jetta S) today. The bedding procedure calls for 5 hard stops from 45 to 5 without cooling the rotors then 5 stops from 25 to 5 allowing the rotors to cool.

Question is I had to drive about a mile to get to a road where I could do this safely.
I had to make a couple of stops before I could do the bedding. I drove gingerly and did very gentile stops. Could this cause issues down the line?

This is not a silly question by any means. You should be more than fine. It takes a healthy dose of friction before new brake pads and rotors are bedded, given a recommended procedure. If you took it easy, it probably had no effect at all. Some would say bedding “breaking in” new pads and rotors is an optional procedure anyways.

Nice. VW actually tells you to bed pads to new rotors, or you were diligent owner and found this by yourself?
With what you describing, worst case is hard braking and having pads jammed to hot rotor at red lights. If you had them just enough, you’ll be fine. I have 2 stop signs before I get to my bedding run, and I allow car to slowly creep forward at stops. But then I have 2 beautiful long steep hills, that are just perfect for bedding.
Excellent job! Bedding is neglected by many and costs them a lot of money and wasted time on “warped” rotors.

the bedding procedure was on the powerstop web site and the instructions came with the pad/rotor kit.

They say that what you are doing when bedding brakes is transferring a layer of brake material to the rotor. This makes the brakes much more powerful. I imagine this becomes important when using brake material intended for the track. For the street I am skeptical. But, I suggest you follow whatever instructions came with the pads.

I drive a high performance car with high performance brakes. But, being lazy, I have never ever bothered to bed brakes. On the other hand I’m not headed for the track, more likely the supermarket.
