First a little info on the car: ’96 Escort. 5 speed. It has a mechanical speedometer (cable driven). I had issues with a small jump in the needle between 15-20mph which is usually a kinked cable, so i swapped out the stock one with one from rockauto (the only place i could find one!) This was over a year ago. Never had any problems until recently.
Since its gotten colder, i’ve been having this problem more often, although i also had this problem on longer highway drives no matter what the temperature. Basically i’ll let the video tell the story, since its easier to explain. Also if you listen closely it has a noise associated with it as well. It never happens below 45-50mph, and almost always above 60mph. Funny thing is all summer it’s been fine, but now that its cooled, it’s been acting up.
As you can see it jumps around a lot.. Sometimes it wont do it as much, other times it can be almost constant, and it also has a metallic whirring sound associated with it when it jumps. Also if it’s ‘behaving’ and i hit a bump, it will cause it to jump for a second, or start acting up again.
I really am not sure how the actual gauge assembly works on an older style speedometer, but i’d love to hear any input that anyone has, specifically if you have seen this exact issue before.
Thanks in advance for any replies.. I’m a tech by trade, but this one actually has me stumped without digging into the cluster (and some days you dont feel up to working on your own car after fixing everyone else’s all day!)
