Bouncing Brake Pedal

      Hi all,

I have an 02 Sierra, with 144k on it. My problem is that when I am driving down the road and hit bumps/pot holes my brake pedal bounces. I am talking bounce enough to disengage cruise control. I’ve checked the fluid level, and it is full. There is some side to side play with the pedal and also some front to back play while the truck is turned off and even some after pumping the brakes with the truck turned off. Any ideas?

sounds like something is worn out or is loose with
the brake pedal. There may be some type of bushing.

Adjust brake switch or add brake pedal return spring. Possibly pedal snubber (little rubber stop bumper) eroded or missing

From what you are describing, sounds like there could be something wrong with the master cylinder. They usually have two return springs inside them which could be sticking causing slack in the push rod. – Just a thought.

Thanks for the replies. As I was driving home from work this morning I did some more “testing” on the pedal, first the road bumps still vibrate the pedal, second, there is no real front to back play in the pedal with the truck running, unless I tap it ever so slightly in quick repetition, which can get it to mimic the road bump bounce to a lesser degree.

College Man, I think you are probably right about something being worn out and D. Hill, you may be right about the master cylinder (I haven’t yet done the research to help with confirmation). Jamin, I like the ingenuity of the return spring idea, however, I prefer it work as factory intended. I’d rather not just add a fix where an additional part may or may not go bad in the future.
