The car doesn’t start, makes a click thats it. When I had it towed to my place, I noticed oil was leaking from the bottom. My tow truck guy thinks the motor’s completey blown, I’m hoping it’s just the starter and the oil gasket. Battery is fine, I am going to check for error codes in the morning. The car has 157,000 miles and has never been in an accident. The original owner told me the car just stopped on them. Would like advice on what to look for to see if the motor’s completely blown or if it’s something less serious. Thanks in advance to all replies.

try turning the engine your self with a barker bar and see if it turns… if it doesnt turn then the engine is sesed up and you will have to take it aprts but also try taking all the serpentine belts off to check if something on the belt is stuck and not causing the engine to turn… and try it manually
        here is an example

@Rob781 any idea on how to check in which direction the engine turns for a 2002 Jeep Liberty?

me I would fist do is take the battory in to an auto part store and have them check the battory… because it might have the volts but not the amps… and you will not even beable to check it with out a load test.. I have see will not turn over even if they try to jump start it if the battory is dead… I uslly see it like 85% of the time the battory is dead.. thats my exerince…
if battory test good…take a rubber melet and while trying to start the car repeating hitting the starter… sometimes it will start
also carefully with out getting the engine moving parts… dont put your hand there you can see if when you turn the the engine are you getting power to it and/or you should beable to feel the starter engaging… because you might be hearing something like the rely not the starter clicking…
sorry the dreection im not to sure … you should be able to turn the motor both ways
but if you relly want to check the battory tonight and do a basic load test its not the best but will tell if you have egugh amps…. connect your volt meter and try starting the car while seeing the volts should stay at somethign like 11 volts but if you see it drop to like 3v then your battory doesnt have egnough charge..
PS ovly run the starter for like 15 sec’s then wait a little before doing it agian… or you will burn it up

maybe someone else could tell you wich way your motor turn its not relly correct and maybe not good to turn it backwards but for a dich effort you can try it either way… let me know how it turns out

FWIW… Unless it is a pre 2000 Honda engine, it will turn to the right (clockwise).

Well, of course they’d say that. They were selling the car. I can guarantee you the seller knew a lot more than what was admitted. (“My daily driver suddenly stopped working. I’ll just go ahead and sell it “as is” without doing any diagnostic work to find out why it stopped working.” Nobody has ever said that.)

The entire situation you’re in smells bad, and the future smells worse. Never buy a Jeep that doesn’t run.

In my opinion, you just bought yourself a mosh pit ticket to a technicolor clusterfuck. If this is just a fun hobby car and you have stacks of cash, by all means, go ahead and sort it out. If, however, you actually need this car to be on the road soon and you intend to use it as a daily driver, or if your finances are limited by life and reality, I suggest you save yourself a lot of frustration and wasted money right now, cut your losses, and send this thing that nobody wanted to the salvage yard.

@Rob781 All the lights come on, radio works, etc, but I will check the battery, I just wanted to do a default test and make sure the motor isn’t completely blown. Gonna try that next, waiting on a friend to come by with the breaker bar. Thanks for the follow up

The person I bought the car from had about 5 cars in his driveway, I don’t think it was his daily driver, apparently it was his mom’s car and she had moved to another state and left the car with him. My main idea was to see if the engine turns. If it does, I’m gonna invest to fix it, if not, I will junk it for quick cash like you said, and thanks for the advice

Question to all of you (@Rob781, @Evil-i, @ToyotaKarl)

This will be my first engine rotation. My idea was to disconnect the battery and the spark plugs. Is there anything else I should do? Just want to make sure I don’t mess up anything worse than it already is, let me know thanks

For rotating it by hand, you should remove the spark plugs.

Theres are some photos I took under the vehicle. I did the best I could given the limited real estate. I didn’t notice any holes poking through, it seems the oil leak is coming from part of the frame under the vehicle. I also noticed in the photo that the thread of the “beam” (let’s just call it for that for now) is coming out a little, almost like it needs to be screwed back in not sure, but to me it seems the leak is coming from that part. I didn’t get a chance to turn the motor yet, going to do that first thing in the morning. Here are the photos, let me know what you guys think, and/or also if I should be looking somewhere else under the vehicle:

                              Tenpin,

Very proud you are taking this on… :cheer: This is how some of us learn…

However, I could not agree more with Evil-i’s assessment about your challenge ahead.

Chances are this will not be an easy task… But that is how we learn, so to that, as long as you ask questions and are willing to learn then we all will help.

This will more than likely stretch your tool availability and other abilities…

About your pictures above… Not enough to make any determination… Their being oil saturated and generally clean is not necessarily a good thing…

                              All the best…

                                ToyotaKarl,

Where to look to see if holes have been poked through the engine? Do I need to jack the car up to get a better view of what’s going on underneath the engine? What’s the best way to pinpoint the source of the oil leak in your opinion?

                                Best regards,

looks like you have a oil pan gasket leak… which isnt the end of the world but I dont under stand what the hell this long silver thing is???
it sorta looks like the rod from the trans to the differential… which makes no since

@Rob781 Yes I was thinking something along those lines, the true test will be when I try to turn the crankshaft pulley by hand tomorrow. I didn’t see anything under the car indicative of a connection rod punching a hole through anything. Is the rod you’re mentioning the “tie rod”? If it helps at all, there’s kind of a “T” underneath the engine, and using that as a frame of reference that silver part is basically at the intersection point of the two lines forming a “T”
