Both Electric Windows going up in hops

Suddenly both electric windows started going up in hops on our ’92 Pontiac Trans Sport SE.

If you leave it for 5-10 min. it would resume normal operation then it freezes again in a few seconds and so on.

Any idea on what could cause this weird behavior in both windows at once & what we can do to fix it?

Note:
– window buttons (left and right) checked-out ok
– driver window motor was changed an year ago – it doesn’t have the same wear as the other motor
– both window lift mechanisms and guides are properly lubricated and work smoothly

Had a similar problem with my 2000 GMC. Think there is a thermal breaker in the circuit instead of a fuse. Probable cause would be either a bad breaker from use and the bad motor over time or the motors are drawing too much current. I would change the breaker and spray silicone on the window tracks to reduce the load on the motors.

Any idea on where we can find those circuit breakers? Are they on the motor itself?

In the convenience center 30 amp…look in your owner’s manual for location.

I believe those breakers are in the motors themselves. Given that it effects both windows, it may be something in the switch that’s causing too much of an amp draw. I think a wiring diagram is going to be your best friend here. More info on solving electrical problems here.

My bet is that there’s something causing a large amp draw in the circuit. Please keep us posted on your progress.

I have located the Circuit Breaker in the Service Manual, will swap with another one and see if the problem persists.

Another idea, from a mechanic, is to put some silicone oil/grease on the window guides/lift to ease the load on the motor. Will try that too.

I would suggest… like Jotmon1 stated: spray silicone. Actually GM wanted you to put dry spay silicone in the window channel guides because the regular silicone would attract dirt.

If the circuit breaker doesn’t do the trick I’d be looking to the master switch. In fact, that’s my primary suspect, but since it’s likely more expensive than the circuit breaker I’d start there.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge but how can I locate that master switch?

Since we already have another vehicle for spare parts replacing it won’t be such a big issue.

No problem, the master switch is in the drivers door that you use to open and close the windows with. If it was me I would replace the circuit breaker and lubricate the window channels first to see if that would repair the issue.

Replaced the Circuit Breaker – no result – windows will go up the same.

We bypassed the master switch and powered a motor directly from the battery – same behaviour.

It must be that the mechanisms/window guides are making the motors work too hard & they are cutting out.

Will go about lubricating the whole vindow guide and see if that brings any noticeable improvement.

I the first thing I usually did was lubricate the window channel guides first. Sorry I didn’t make myself clearer on that.
