      Hi Guys,

I have a 2006 BMW E90. Here is how the events started to take place.

The car started to make the same noise as when you have a hole in the muffler. However, it only happens once the car is warm or you are going over 50mph or do something where you work the engine a bit more such as getting onto the high way. A few days after that the check engine light went on. Plugged in my scanner and it said Fault: 01, pressed enter to see the fault and it said fault NA.

Did the basic checks. oil level good, gas cap on properly.

Now what do you believe is going on. Firstly do I have a crappy scanner? Secondly could a hole in the exhaust cause a check engine light? Or could it be something else since the noise only happens once I exceed 50mph?

Also worth noting that the car drives fine, idles fine. Other than the noise and engine light everything is fine.

As always thanks for your help guys.

On Beamers you can read generic codes with a “toy” scanner but to read with a description you will need a more sophisticated scan tool.

If you have an exhaust leak in front of the upstream O2 sensor it could cause the MIL to come on.

Is a “toy” scanner the name brand? Do they sell them on Amazon?

By calling it a TOY, as in a kids toy I mean cheap. You may need a professional scan tool similar to what the dealer would use..

This is the reader I got. I guess I need something fancier or need to take it into the shop.

Yeah…unfortunately a generic scan tool will not give much info on some cars.
