BMW Burns Oil – HELP

Ok so I’ve got a 2004 BMW 316i E46 (German Model not sold in US) 1.8L Petrol 85KW-115HP with an N42B18 engine (Inline-four engine) with 73,000 miles and it burns 1 Quart every 500-700 miles.

Before starting here is what has been changed so far:

      *Valve stem seals
*Tried to change oil. Used Mobil1, Castrol LL01 etc
      *Valve Cover Gasket

Oil Separator will be changed in a week, this part costs a lot (Where I live) so I’ll be buying the oil separator without the hoses and will use the same hoses or I might get after market ones.
Quick note there is a hose above the inatke manifold that I found out it was collapsed, not sure if this is a sign.

      Symptoms:

Smokes blue only when the engine is at high RPM and it has been idling for a while (My Video below):

Car smokes only when the engine warms up, otherwise there i nothing coming out of the exhaust
Car runs great no power loss, no hesitation it’s fast and very great.

      No codes what so ever.

I just read that the ccv oil separator can fill up with oil
and cause this issue. If you are reusing the hoses be careful
with them as they do get brittle. Clean them out with carb spray.
I would also replace the hose that is collapsed.
Keep us posted on your progress.

It could also be caused by stuck oil control rings on the pistons. I seem to remember BMW recommending very long oil change intervals around this time and coked engine oil can certainly be a problem.

I would recommend a compression test to check the general condition of your engine. http://www.ericthecarguy.com/component/content/article/83-videos/the-basics/1015-how-to-perform-a-compression-test

Sorry forgot to note, a compression test was done on a cold engine and the results are great. All cylinders have great compression.

Compression can be great even when oil rings are gone

A compression test gives a good idea on the running condition of the engine but it certainly ain’t perfect. Anyways, its good that the compression test results came back good so that rules out valves and the compression rings on the pistons. Does this vehicle have a PCV valve? I would go there next.

I bet car was abused by previous owner. People don’t buy BMW’s to ride like a grandma

Hmm well when I took the Engine cover off I did found a hose that was collapsed when the engine is idle but return the normal when I give it gas. That hose is connected to the Oil Seperator PCV. I did a research on these engines and it ended up that these can go bad on all bmws.

That could definatley be your issue.
