Blower Motor Swap With “More Powerful” Motor??

Hi all,

I have a 2003 camry that blows cold air but just not enough air. The blower motor seems to run fine and I don’t ever remember thinking that there isn’t enough air in the past, so I’m pretty sure it is a ‘recent’ problem, just not sure how recent this is.

Can I replace a blower motor with a more powerful motor that gives out more air? If so, what steps/precautions should I take?

Before I jumped to looking into more powerful motors I’d first do things like check my cabin air filter and the blower motor squirrel cage for obstructions.

The blower should have multiple speeds. Are they all working?

The two previous responses are right on the money. First, make certain that the blower is indeed working in all speeds, then check the cabin air filter. If that is dirty, you won’t get much air flow. After that, I would pull the blower motor out, and check the squirrel cage / fan, and inside it’s housing for debris. Sometimes the evaporator box (the bit with the air conditioning parts in it) gets crudded up too, though that is typically much harder to get to, but it might be worth checking if your air flow is better using heat than it is using A/C. Finally, if all those check out, it is possible that your fan motor is getting old, and not working as well as it used to. Typically, this would be caused by the lubrication drying up in it. A shot of WD40 at base of the motor shaft, where it enters the motor body might free it up a bit. IF that helps, then it is likely time to either replace the motor, or have a motor shop rebuild it.
