Eric! thanks for what you’re doing man keep it up! every time I’m stumped on something i see if there is any ericthecarguy videos on it!

Anyways, i just bought a 95 toyota celica st 1.8L and the blower motor isn’t working. the relay does click when i turn the switch from “off” to the first speed. I already tested the resistor and it’s good. there IS 12v coming to the plug for the blower motor with the switch on, and the blower motor works when hooked up to direct battery voltage. with everything working, why does nothing happen when plugged up and switched on? isn’t 12v the same no matter what source?

Please help! its getting hot in KY

      Thanks, Dustin

some components on a vehicle use less than 12 volts but its likely that blower motor uses 12 volts especually since its connector seems too be giving off that voltage. Hi i am not eric in fact eric may pop in here as well as a few other intelligent others who can help, this is quite the pickle the connector that plugs into your blower motor does it have too bend at any weird angles too plug into the blower motor, did you try wiggling it around a little when testing the voltage too see if there would be a drop…

sometimes stuff can be in where the blower motor is sitting and can stop it from rotating check for leaves and debris…

i am not the best at electrical but this is the advice i can give besides this

When you checked for 12V at the blower motor connector, was it still connected to the motor or disconnected? You could have a wiring issue with a high resistance/partial open and it will give you 12V at a disconnected plug, but when you plug it in, this resistance will respond to attempted current flow and drop the voltage to a low value.

In this case I’d join the ‘thowing parts at it’ crowd and put in a resistor block before chasing the wiring. Ninety percent of the time this will fix it and if it doesn’t you are not out that much money.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. when i tested the resistor i just checked the continuity between all contacts and they all had continuity. Then i tested the resistor contacts for voltage with it plugged in and switched on and there was none for any contact. Does that mean i have a bad resistor or an open circuit? i can’t figure out why the plug would still have power…

I’m not familiar enough with your particular vehicle to know for sure, but if it’s switching the ground-side of the circuit instead of the power-side, the plug will always have 12V on it. So perhaps it’s the ground that’s traveling through your resistor-pack, and not the 12V?

Eric has a great video on figuring out whether something is power-side or ground-side switched:

                  Good luck.

This is the way most blowers work. The low speeds run through the resistor. The high speed bypasses the resistor and goes straight to the motor. That said, if the resistor is bad, you don’t have any low speeds but you have high speed. If the motor is bad, it doesn’t work at any speed. If on Hi speed you have 12v at the connector to the motor but when plugged in, it doesn’t work, you might check the ground connection to see if there is a ground problem.

More information on electrical testing can be found here.

Good luck and keep us posted.
