I have a 2006 Chevy Equinox with a 3.4, it tries to overheat at idle but does ok when driving.. it obviously has electric fans, but what throws me off is that if you put it in neutral and rev the engine it cools down, could this be air in the system or a deteriorated rotor on the water pump?

Always start by bleeding the cooling system. Eric has a video on how to do so.

Are the fans on and running? coolant level good?
