I would have posted this in the regular forums but, you had commented about it in the belt tensioner premium video section and I thought I should touch on why just for your own knowledge Eric because I know you love knowing more.

If there is actual dealership techs working next door we have to run Diesel Particulate Filter “DPF” Regenerations aka “Regens” to turn the soot to ash. They need to be run for roughly 65 mins on the newer trucks older trucks 20-40 mins it depends on whether it has a Selective Catalyst Reduction System “SCR” it takes longer with SCR.. It reduces the soot to ash and blows it out the tail pipe. The exhaust can get as high as 1500F (sometimes higher and explode if oil is present – fun fun) and will melt most shop exhaust vent systems and also the roofs of some buildings (don’t ask). That might be part of the reason.

Even if they are not a dealership trucks still need to run them. There is 3 different versions to this one is passive where the truck naturally gets hot enough that the system will do it own its own. There is active where it needs to use an injector to get the temperatures up high enough. Both of these happen while the ruck is going down the road. Then there is parked and if the DPF is clogged up or has a high soot load they have to do a parked regen. If they have dealer techs like I said it is a forced regen which is different from parked as it lasts longer and is controlled by a laptop or scan tool.

The other part might be that people don’t know how to use cardboard properly to block off the radiator to warm the truck up quickly. You need to do this to check the thermostats obviously, but also because a lot of the engines will not have certain things like injectors and Jake brakes act up unless it is warm.

On the opposite side of the coin there are a whole lot of things that set engine warning lights if a truck is not properly warmed up. I know because I constantly have to explain glow plug lights, how the SCR system has to get to proper temperature before you leave, etc to drivers who set those codes. The best part is in my brand at least there is an auto idle up. So you turn on the truck and sit there and don’t touch anything and it does it for you in about 15mins. Then your truck is ready to go at proper temperature etc.

The sound of a good big diesel is like music. I wish I lived/worked around more of them. Oh, and I do like the sound of Jake brakes. I don’t work on any of this stuff but find it really neat. Thats great information you have provided.

Were seeing a lot of innovation from the trucking world coming into cars now Dpfs a few years ago now VW are running SCR in the latest diesels

We tend to do parked DPF regens and they annoy the hell out of people as there loud must be even worse for a truck Only reason we do parked regens is time we have a secure area that the car can be left to run it’s regen No point trying a passive as usually if they’ve come in for a dpf problem it’s well and truly clogged up and being so close to london it’s a waste of time trying to get the engine hot enough to carry one out.

I can imagine adblue top ups will be a common thing in 5-10 years for automotive diesels.

Thanks for the info. It’s good info, and I think it would be beneficial to regular visitors of the forum. I read your post, but I’m not sure why you posted it here instead of say in the General Discussion forum. I’d be happy to move it or leave it here. I’ll leave that up to you.

            Thanks again for the info.

The info is great. More people in this country(USA) need to be educated on Diesels in my opinion.

Then would you like me to move this post into the General Discussion category?

Fine with me move it. I will have to find that video I linked before also. It explains it in depth.
