This is my public service announcement.

I received four sets of bad calipers from Advanced Auto. Found out their supplier, Cardone, is moving to Mexico. So this explains the problems with quality control. Employees must be distracted or even vengeful. Repeated problem with swollen, torn, frozen slide pin bushings. They may be using incompatible lube on bushings. Frozen slide pins can cause uneven pad wear. Advance Auto store manager said, without me asking, “so that’s why I’ve been selling so many brake pads lately”! This is probably a class action lawsuit, but I don’t have time to deal with this.

Cardone is only remanufacturer for all four auto parts stores in my area. Eventually, bought caliper without bracket from Autozone. It was also from Cardone, and it had problems with the banjo bolt hole. Couldn’t thread banjo bolt into hole. Had to chase threads with tap. Grit/paint in threads, perhaps residue from sand blasting. Decided to disassemble caliper to remove grit that fell into caliper.

District manager from Advance Auto was rude and unreasonable with me. Will not do business with Advance Auto again. You’ve been warned.

I’ve installed and re-installed more Cardone power steering racks than I care to remember. Unless the part was dirt cheap I wouldn’t touch their stuff with a 10 foot pole.

My experiences are the same: as a DIY’er, I have installed 4 sets of Cardone rebuilt brake calipers and all have failed within a year. I was able to get free exchange under warranty but it’s still a lot of work to repeat the job over and over again.
