Bent Wheel Questions

My 2009 Civic has alloy wheels. Two of them are bent (diagnosed by a Mavis Discount Tire shop).

I can’t afford to replace the alloy wheels (Honda wants $500 for each wheel).

One option is to pay to have the alloy wheels straightened. Does anyone have experience with this process? Does it work well? Does it actually eliminate vibrations?

I have never tried a place that fixes wheels. Some take your wheel
and give you one that is already done. Then others just fix your wheel.
They supposedly give you a warranty that it will be fixed and run true.
I usually find new wheels on ebay for a good price and replace the wheel.
I know thats not what you are looking for but you might be surprised.

Thing about alloy is, it can be bent quite a bit and hold just fine or, it can be bent a little bit, but develop spider cracks, and hold worth of nothing.
How much is repair? It’s simple balance of repair vs say set of wheels off craigslist. Or, any Mexican place by a junkyard.

The repair would cost $240 total (I need two wheels fixed). I’m leaning towards getting 4 brand new steel wheels from Tire Rack. They sell them for $60 each brand new. The hub caps are cheap too. I can get 4 brand new wheels and caps for $342 delivered. I’m going for longevity, and I think that new steel wheels would outlast repaired alloys. Are tire rack wheels good quality? They’re a no-name brand, just “basic steel wheels”.

I’ve run the Tire Rack steel wheels and never had a problem. All that may mean is I never hit anything. However, I notice the exact same wheels on base model cars new from the factory.

The black wheels with some chrome nuts look pretty good sans hubcaps.

BernardiParts.com has the OEM Honda alloy wheels for $225. I use this website all the time the are great. They are a Honda dealer in MA.

Trying to bend back wheels or “repairing” them is not a good idea. I would also get a second opinion from a place that is known to be honest unless they actually showed you how it was bent and you agree. Lots of con people out there.

I have never heard anything other then good stuff from tire rack.

I ended up just buying steel wheels from tire rack. MDK22, you’re right about getting a second opinion. I had two shops look at the wheels, and at Mavis I actually witnessed the bent wheel wobbling on the balancer. The wobbling was very obvious, so I’m confident that the wheels are bent. On tire rack I spent $340, which includes 4 steel wheels, 4 wheel covers, and 20 lug nuts (shipping and tax included). What should I do with my two good alloy wheels, and the two bent ones?

Take the bent ones to a scrap yard, see what you can get for the metal, sell the good ones locally or online to recoup some of the expense.

Well, well, well. It’s done and over, of course.
I bought 2 steelies and 2 75% studdies for my Camry, mounting and balancing included, from Mexican place $120 out the door. They sell steelies for about $10-12 a piece.
But, like I said – it’s done and over, though I really don’t get it. A steel wheels looks what it looks like, new or used, in about a month of use, so why buy new ones?
