Bent rims

i went to have my tires changed on my 2011 Acura RL and was told that I have 3 out of four rims bent. The ONLY symptom that I can recall having was a very slow loss of air in ONE of my tires. Otherwise I had NO vibrations or any other problems with my wheel/tires. I also had a wheel alignment done.

My question is do I need to do anything about these rims. I was told by that shop that a bent rim can cause irregular tire wear and premature tire failure. Then I spoke to another shop and they said that the rims did not have to be corrected unless I felt vibrations from my tires.

I am confused about the significance of this problem and whether a repair is necessary? The first shop said that a repair for my rims would be about $150 per rim, which sounded pretty high to me.

I would think you would feel steering wheel vibration
if the bent rims were in the front. Did anyone show you
the bent rims? What symptoms brought on this assessment?
here is a way to check run out.

The only symptom I was having was a VERY slow loss of air in my right rear tire. I have felt NO vibration. And I was told by the first shop about the bent rims only after they had replaced my tires with new ones. Not sure what I need to do next? Have them repaired or wait for a vibration or air loss before I repair the rims?

The shop should not have mounted new tires on bad rims. They
should have told you to get new rims and sent you out with the
old tires. Did anyone show you the damage? Was the tire leaking
from the rim or was there a puncture in the tire? sounds fishy to
me. Did this shop want to sell the new rims or just told you of the
            problem?

I had a bent rim oon my passenger side front rim. The signs of it were rather rapid air loss (about 5psi a day) and ALOT of vibration. When i had the shop fix by brakes i mentioned the loss of air they took a look at it and said it was a bent rim… only charged me $22 to fix (the same price as getting a tyre mounted on a rim) they simply pounded out the dent yet couldnt tell me how it got bent and saying steel rims getting bent are uncommon

The shop mounted the new tires on the rims and did not tell me about the bent rims until AFTER the tires were mounted. That is when I called another shop and they told me to wait and see if I developed any vibrations with the NEW tires on my rims. If not, then I did not need to do anything further with my wheels, otherwise I should have the rims repaired. I NEVER felt any vibrations…only a VERY slow leak from one of my tires. Presently I am monitoring my tire pressures and will repair the rim IF I notice a leak. Is this the correct approach to this problem?

since the shop mounted the tyres on the BENT rims and thats something they SHOULDNT have done to begin with it pretty much moot point now. Check the tyres daily and see if they lose air. If they dont i wouldnt worry about it. If you want the rims fixed walmart will take a look at them and see if they can be unbent any it would cost you $10 a rim to do that. Any local mechanic can look at it it does not have to be a tyre shop. it should NEVER cost you more that $30 a rim to have them fixed that is assuming you dont need new rims.

                    In my opinion.. no.

The shop very likely did not pick up on the bent rims until the tires were mounted and they spun them up to balance them. Bent rims are defective rims and the shop has covered themselves by telling you about the problem. I assume they pointed out to you which 3 were bad and if not you should have asked.

Original equipment alloy wheels from reputable manufacturers – as in the case of your car – tend to be of good quality and fairly tough so the 3 bent wheels must have had a decent hit to bend them (either by you or another driver). The problem is that the now damaged alloy material can also develop cracks.

If it were my car I would not keep those alloy wheels for safety reasons but replace all 4 with a quality aftermarket wheel. (Keep the good/undamaged original wheel as a spare). You can buy very good 18 x 8 or 18 x 8.5 aftermarket wheels from reputable wheel manufacturers to fit your car in the 200 -245 price range. That is not a lot of money for new wheels and it is way better than running around in your late model Acura on damaged items.

another option if you want to go that route is get some steel rims of the same size as the stock rims. Steel wheels are cheaper and the the verity of aftermarket hubcaps are about as big as aftermarket rims themselves just a fraction the cost. You should be able to pick up for or 5 steel wheels for $20 a piece (i have no seen them beyond $50 a piece. Im sure that steel wheels would be a “Downgrade” however it is the cheapest option. If you get the EXACT size rims you can just have a tyre shop put ur new tyres u just bought on the steel rims saves you the expence of 4 new tyres again. It does not have to be Honda Rims any rims that fit the bolt pattern (Such as GM, Chrysler or Ford) should work too. When i had my rim fixed the shop said that bent rims is all too common in Alloy wheels not so much on steel wheels.

That is because alloy wheels tend to break before they bend, Steel wheels usually bend at the rim flange which is easily straightened.
