I have a 2002 Honda Civic EX D17A2 1.7 Liter w/ Auto Trans that has what sounds like a torque converter issue. I’m hearing a high pitched whine in any/all gears. The transmission shifts into all gears. When cold the car will move although slowly. When warmed up, it will not move. I’m reading this may be a bad torque converter, or a bad transmission pump, or clogged transmission filter.

I have pulled the transmission and visually inspected the TC. I don’t see anything out of ordinary except two spots on the transmission side, which appear to be metal rubbing at what appear to be weld points. You can see the picture attached. The fluid smells and looks ok. I don’t see any metal in it, nor on the drain plug.

Is there a bench test that I can perform to test the TC? The stator one way bearing seems to be working ok as it will only spin one direction.

If this issue isn’t the TC but is the transmission pump/filter, is the pump/filter something we can replace easily? I’m not seeing many parts dealers have the pump/filter available.

Yea. I’ve already read these. They speak of testing while the car is working. My TC has already been pulled.

I don’t know of a way to bench test the converter. 🙁

There is no way of bench testing the converter. What you are experiencing is a plugged filter. The filter will plug with clutch lining over time and plug the filter and the suction through the plugged filter is creating the noise. After sitting for a bit the debris will fall away from the filter and allow the transmission to engage again until it draws up enough junk to plug it again. The transmission has the filter inside requiring it to be removed and disassembled to change. Time for a rebuild/remanufactured or used transmission.
