Hi, I just started at my local community college to get my certificate as a mechanic. But for now I have to take general studies i e math, reading, and writing to get into the shop class. My question is; how does taking general studies to get into the shop class relate to becoming a auto tech? I so far don’t see any usefull information in my reading or writing class and I see a tid bit in my math class…does anyone know how I can fit general studies into cars?? I am really wanting to become a tech but I for right now just don’t see how what I am learning partains to a car at all..

If you don’t want to take general education classes, you need to go to a trade school that offers certificates and not associate or bachelor’s degrees. Otherwise you have to satisfy the accrediting board for your school and what they determine you need for a degree.

bummer. its the only school I am able to go to. So I either suck it up and do my best or don’t become a mechanic. Looks like I will have to suck it up. Plus I have to figure financial aid out. the fafsa office at the school told me they don’t cover the automotive service course at the college. I will have to take some kind of credit classes for financial aid to keep backing me up. this is a hard field to get into if you don’t make much money huh.

Still want to do this for a living though.
