Hey all, I’m dealing with a 2008 beetle auto with the L5 engine.
The problem……
The regular bulb for dim, not the bright headlights rarely last more than 4 months, sometimes less.
I’ve researched online some and it seems to be a common thing, but no recalls have been issued for it.
The popular conclusion is that the stock headlamp assembly just don’t hold the bulb firmly in place, causing a bit of wiggle that breaks the filiment in the bulbs. I know the plastic cage that the headlamp assembly slides into in chinsy at best but they are solid for now. I have removed the molex that the headlamp plugs into, and found a way to brace it in the plugged in position better since that seemed weak to me, but the bulbs still die frequently. There is no water or moisture in these assemblies at all. I’m assuming that buying some afftermarket assemblies might be better than stock, but I wanted to check here to see if any of you Mcguevers figured out a workaround that can make this an easy thing for me.
It’s my mom’s car and she’s a six hour drive away. She’s driving a big van for now because the headlights work. I’m hoping to get a real fix before I drive back there for a visit.
Please help!
