First thing is the alternator a reman or brand new?
Second when I buy an alternator or starter I make the parts store bench test them. To many times I have put customer cars together and the parts I buy are junk. Remanufactured parts are never as good as factory OEM parts.

When you say you tested the voltage. Where? On the battery? On the alternator? Does the alternator have a fuseable link to the battery? If you check the voltage on the back of the alternator (big terminal and ground reference) what voltage do you read? 14 +/- means the fuse between the alternator and battery is bad. If the battery failed shorted it could have blown the fuse. Fuse or fusable link should be about 100 amp. Did you have the old alternator tested to see if it was bad?

The above videos should help but based on your description make sure you have everything hooked up correctly. It sounds like you may have the polarity wrong.
