When I bought the car the new owner agreed to fit a standard steering wheel back in place.

All was fine. After around 2000 miles of me driving it, the airbag light come on.

So far, I’ve disconnected the battery and remove steering wheel.
I connected battery after 20 min or so, and the light remains on.

      Any idea?

      Thanks

You will have to scan the car with a scanner capable of scanning the air bag system. The problem may be a crash sensor, seat air bag, clock spring, or something other than the steering wheel bag.

On the Toyota yaris 2006 and 2007 the manufacturer have found that have an electrical hire in the base of the sterling wheel that come loose and need to be replace due to the turn and turn. You might have a loose sensor on your car. Finally, you might have a vibration near a air bag sensor that light up the SRS icon.
You need a SRS car code reader to find you. But this king of scanner is 400 us$ and more. You might need to go in a garage.

The clockspring will wear in time and sometimes become damaged working on the steering column or when removing a rack and pinion gear, gearbox, or coupling. If the steering wheel is allowed to spin freely the clocksprings connection may break, resulting in an open circuit and an illuminated air bag light. This will require clockspring replacement.

Many broken clocksprings could have been saved if the tech were to lock the steering wheel with a steering wheel brace or even the seat belt if necessary. This just keeps the wheel from spinning freely and breaking this fragile connection.

Before making assumptions on what the problem is, pull the SRS code so you have something to work from.

Good luck and keep us posted.
