As long as you can afford it that’s great. It’s fairly easy to just replace the ball joint alone. Hardest part is getting the nut off if it’s rusted and wants to turn the joint in the socket. I just replace the joint in my vehicles.

Some cars such as Nissan. You are forced to replace the control arm with the ball joint because they come attached into one piece.

If the ball joint itself can just be done. I would chage
            just the ball joint.

Just depends on the part. For 90’s Hondas with double-wishbone front suspension, the upper ball joints are not sold separately from the control arms unless you go with POS crappy aftermarket. Tie rod ball joints are also integral with the steering outer tie rods. Lower ball joints, on pretty much all cars, are definitely replaceable by themselves and IMHO would be a huge waste of money and parts to replace the entire lower control arm.

It depends a lot on the vehicle. Some vehicle, the control arm, bushings and ball joint are only sold separately.

Aftermarket suppliers (Moog) sometime offer upgraded control arm/ball joint assemblies typically on pickups and heavy SUVs. The OEM have non-replaceable call joints while these heavy duty one have replaceable ball joints.

My personal pet peeve is suspension joints, especially ball joints, that are NOT greaseable !
