Is there a cheaper way to remove a ball joint than to spend 100 dollars on a kit? is there a method to were you wouldn’t need a press, or remover tool?

You can rent the tool kit at many automotive shop. Give autozone or advanced auto parts a call. You pay a deposit of like 25 bucks or so and they refund you the money when you return the tool. There might be a couple bucks of a usage charge but it is very cheap.
October 27, 2011 at 11:00 am #444298I bought my ball joint kit years ago at harbor freight. believe it was about 30.00 dollars. came with a selection of receiver cups and covers for the cups. it has held up well ( just keep the drive screw greased well ) can be used for other things as well ( have used it for removing u-joints ) personal I would buy one , then if the opportunity arises you can use it over and over and make some cash helping other people.
October 27, 2011 at 11:00 am #444295I’ve seen them removed with a hammer before. Although, after using that method myself once (my ball joint press was missing the adapter I needed), I decided that I would never use that method again. My arm felt like it was going to fall off by the time that ball joint finally came out. In all honesty, you’ll be better off if you just rent the ball joint press from an autoparts store.
October 27, 2011 at 11:00 am #444296the Auto zone in my city makes you pretty much buy the kit then they give the money back to when you return it. so if the kit is $100 then you have to give them $100 to take the kit. then once you return it they give you all of your money back. idk if that’s how it is everywhere so u might just want to call around and hopefully they only ask for deposit. other than that idk of a procedure that removes ball joints with out the kits. have you tried looking around YouTube for a how to video?
October 27, 2011 at 11:00 am #444297Also at Advance Auto Parts not only can you rent the tool but say you want to keep the tool instead of returning it, its yours!
but if you do want to return the tool there is no usage charges or anything in that matter. You get a 100% refund back no questions asked! It’s a great deal!October 28, 2011 at 11:00 am #444299It depends on what you’re working on, I made this video that uses the ‘hammer’ method.

It’s nice to have the proper tools however and the suggestion about renting or borrowing the tool is something I also recommend.

Most Autozones do this. I have a full kit but depending upon the application I’ll use a hammer to remove them and the kit to install them. Like Dodge trucks lower ball joints are pretty easy to remove with a hammer. Plus if your having a bad day you’ll feel so much better after you get done 😉 . Good luck.
